ODONA CONVENTION 2010 The 2010 ODONA Convention, Reach for the Stars-Touch a Life: Make a Difference with ODONA is coming soon. The Convention opens Sunday February 28, and runs Monday March 1 through Tuesday March 2, 2010. Convention Brochures have been mailed and are available on the website on the Convention page. We are excited about our speakers and grateful to our current sponsors. Thank You to Our Current 2010 Sponsors
Our organization has a new executive assistant, Iris Elaine Lehman. Elaine is a retired social studies teacher with a BA in sociology and a MA and PhD in Educational Studies. She resides in Columbus, Ohio, so is centrally located, has been with the organization about three months and is doing a fantastic job. We are so lucky to have found her and appreciate her organizational and time management skills. Welcome Elaine. Plans are underway to have an ODONA member become an instructor for the DON certification course through AALTCN so we can offer the certification to our membership. Peggy Kish will be working with Charlotte Eliopoulus toward this goal. The ODONA trustees appointed Peggy Kish to the position of Chairperson of the Board. Peggy will be learning the ins-and-outs of ODONA with the goal being to insert the ODONA board as the governing body of the organization at the 2010 convention. The trustees and advisors will retain final authority on constitutional and bylaw issues and will act to arbitrate and settle any potential conflicts of interest that may arise. Convention 2010 is coming soon, February 28 thru March 2, 2009. The ODONA board has been busy working to put the programs and entertainment together. We think the membership is going to be pleased with the convention content. All evaluations of last years’ programs have been collated and sent out to the various speakers. Overall every presentation received high marks. Our theme for 2010 is Reach for the Stars; Touch a Life. Our ODONA Boot Camp seminar is presented once or twice a year for the beginning DON. Basic information on various topics necessary to be an effective DON is presented. The program is a 7.5 contact hour presentation. ODONA plans to work on an advanced program in the near future. With all the changes coming our way on a daily basis, almost, it is important to keep current. Congratulations to Peggy Kish, Ohio Health Care Association (OHCA) Hero of the Month! Peggy Kish, RN, Clinical Service Director at Shadyside Care Center, was selected as the Hero of Long-Term Care for the month of October, 2009. Peggy is the future Chairman of the Board for ODONA, is on the ODONA Board, and is one of the Regional Directors of ODONA Region 5. She has been Clinical Service Director for Zandex for seven years. She has also held the positions of Director of Nursing, MDS Case Manager, Nursing Supervisor and Psychiatric Nurse. In addition to her professional duties, Peggy has volunteered at the local senior citizen center and the local schools. She also plays a big part in the Nurse Aide Olympics held in Zanesville over the past two years, and chairs the Zandex Wellness Program. Nancy George RNC President ODONA/LTC ODONA SCHOLARSHIPS The following scholarships were awarded at the Awards Dinner during this year's ODONA Convention in March. The scholarships are: The ODONA LTC Scholarship is awarded to current ODONA members who have been working in Long Term Care for a minimum of one year. The scholarship is intended to support the mission of ODONA in assisting members in continuing formal education related to the role of the Director of Nursing. It is the goal of ODONA to award one scholarship in each of the state's five regions annually. The ODONA Nursing Assistant Scholarship is available to STNA's in homes where the DON is an ODONA member. This was established to acknowledge the many individuals wishing to become Long Term Care nurses and recognizing the shortage of nurses in the industry. The ODONA LPN to RN Transition Scholarship is available to LPN's in homes where the DON is an ODONA member. This was established with the goal of creating a larger pool for future DON's and recognizing the shortage of DON's in the industry. Among the Winners were Theresa Keppele who received the ODONA Nursing Assistant Scholarship and Amber Howard who received the ODONA LPN to RN Transition Scholarship. Scholarship applications may be submitted at any time and are reviewed on February 1st each year, and presented at the Annual ODONA Convention. Applications may be obtained by calling the ODONA office or downloaded from the ODONA website. ODONA CONVENTION 2009 The twentieth annual ODONA convention opened on Sunday evening, March 1, with a presentation that answered the question, "What Do We Know About the MDS 3.0 Now?" with Jane Belt, MS, GCNS-BC, RAC-MT; Plante & Moran, Pllc. From that moment forward it was two and a half days packed with educational sessions; networking; an impressive vendor hall filled with products, equipment, and technology to help us do a better job of taking care of our residents and keeping up with all the requirements of state and federal agencies; and lots of good food and fun. Our scholarship raffle raised money for future scholarships, provided laughs, and good interactions. The ODONA board works very diligently to bring you the latest in industry information and we value your input. Thanks to all of you who made suggestions for next year. Yes, it is already in the planning stages. 2010 will be ODONA's 21st Anniversary as an organization providing support and networking to Ohio Directors of Nurses. It doesn't seem possible that much time has elapsed. We have something very special planned for this occasion and hope that all of you will be able to join us. As always anyone interested in being part of a dynamic group of dedicated individuals intent on keeping the best in long term care nursing, just call (866-226-3662) or write to us (odonaltc@gmail.com) and we will be in touch. Thanks to the membership for your support. Don't forget to apply for a scholarship if you are in the process of continuing your education or have nurses in your facility working toward a higher degree in an area associated with long term care. These are given out at the annual convention banquet. Applications are due by February 1st of 2010 and can be found and downloaded from the ODONA website. See you in March 2010 at the convention! ODONA AT THE OHCA CONVENTION Once again ODONA had a booth at the OHCA Convention held during the first week of May. Our booth location was wonderful and gave us the opportunity to meet and speak with hundreds of current and potential ODONA members, explaining our mission and the importance of supporting each other. We felt it was the best OHCA convention ever with a new layout in the vendor hall making it very easy for attendees to move around. At our booth we distributed reminder fliers for our 2010 ODONA Convention, February 28, March 1, and March 2 and did hourly drawings for the many gift certificates we gave away. |
